Learning to Live the Life

Life groups

It’s so much easier to follow Jesus when you do it together. Our Life groups are mid-week groups of people who meet to share friendship, pray for one another, study the Bible together and work out how to live the life of faith in their everyday lives wherever they are: at work, home, school, leisure or travel.

Find out more about life groups below or contact Anita Dobson, head of discipleship, tel: 0775 323 3950 anita.dobson@christchurchdownend.com

Life groups at home
There are eight groups meeting in homes around the parish, mostly in the evenings but some in the daytime. Groups vary, some meeting weekly, others fortnightly.

Open Church
Open Church is an open group so anyone can come along at any time. Coffee is served from 10.30am and the session begins at 11am and includes prayer, bible study, reflection and discussion.

Open Church is held at Christ Church Downend.

Other small groups

Mothers’ Union (MU)
The Mothers Union is a worldwide movement supporting marriage, family life and the spiritual and physical welfare of children. They do this through prayer, campaigning and social action.

Our MU at Christ Church meets on the first Wednesday of the month at 2.15pm in the Parish Hall. Members and non-members are welcome. We hold a short act of worship, hear a talk about some aspect of community life or Mothers’ Union projects, and finish with refreshments.

We also get involved in raising funds for Mothers’ Union projects locally (for example, funding refreshments for families of children staying in the Bristol Children’s Hospital) and abroad, supporting literacy for mothers and girls, vocational training, health and hygiene and many more.

We support

  • Activities for families and children in our church
  • We volunteer with local projects, such as offering refreshments to families visiting their loved ones at HMP Ashfield
  • We support young women in Kumi in Eastern Uganda to train at a vocational training centre through our partnership with Mission Direct.

Get involved

If you would like to get involved in supporting one of these projects please contact us.
